Why We Crave Sugar, Carbs, and Salt (And How to Heal Your Body)

Have you ever wondered why you crave sugar, carbohydrates, and salt—especially during stressful times? If you're on a healing journey with us, perhaps you've already signed up for the early bird waitlist for our upcoming course. You’re about to find out what’s truly behind those cravings and why your body seeks these foods when you're stressed.

What’s Behind These Cravings?

When your body is under stress, it releases cortisol and adrenaline—two powerful stress hormones. These hormones play a major role in how your body responds to stress, anxiety, depression, and even disease. When this happens, your body naturally craves certain foods to help balance things out.

If you’re under a lot of stress and find yourself craving simple sugars, your body is seeking the quickest form of energy it can use to deal with the pressure. Sugars provide an immediate energy boost to help your body heal. But here’s the catch: because of the stress and the energy it consumes, your body isn’t able to utilize that food properly. Instead of healing, you may gain weight and feel trapped in a cycle of cravings without real progress.

The Binge Eating Cycle

I can totally relate to this. I used to be a huge binge eater. I would starve myself and then binge on everything I could get my hands on. Afterward, I’d feel incredibly guilty, so I wouldn’t eat for a couple of days. This cycle of guilt, shame, and emotional eating led to me becoming clinically obese. The cravings for sugar and salt were unrelenting, and I couldn’t understand why my body was reacting this way.

But eventually, I realized my body was dealing with a traumatic injury that hadn’t healed properly—from my ankle to my spine, and it affected my entire body. Not being able to sleep and constantly being in pain caused a massive amount of stress, which led to those constant sugar and salt cravings.

Healing and Balancing Your Body

What we need to do is give our body what it really needs—not the quick fixes of sugar and salt, but the nutrients that can lower stress and promote healing. While simple sugars aren’t the most nutritious, they can occasionally provide a quick energy boost when necessary. However, when we learn how to free our energy and balance our stress, these foods won’t have the same impact on our bodies.

When you’re truly healing your body, you won’t gain weight from sugar, carbs, or salt the way you once did. Your body will stop craving the foods that are harmful to it and start desiring the healthier options that will help your body heal.

The Mind-Body Connection

If you're craving sugar and salt, it’s a sign that your body is out of balance. It’s dealing with too much cortisol, too much adrenaline, and too many fears and doubts—all of which contribute to that belly fat you might be seeing. But here's the good news: this can be easily resolved once we understand how the mind-body connection works. By lowering your stress response, your body won’t crave unhealthy foods anymore. Instead, it will crave nutritious, healing foods that support your overall health.
